Google to launch a new operating system

As Gmail and other Google applications come out of beta, they announce that they will be writing an operating system! After the success (functionality-wise rather than download count) of Chrome, I personally can’t wait for it to come out, and will be one of the first to download and install it. roll on 2010!

Defenders in tights

I’ve just stumbled across a fine advert for Google’s Chrome browser. I’ve never seen any ads for it before other than text links suggesting that you might possibly at some point maybe want to try a different browser. I hope that you enjoy the Defenders in tights ad as much as I did.

What is a browser?

Google went to Times Square in New York and posed (what we believe to be) a simple question – What is a browser? The answers were quite interesting – some people had no clue; others were painfully close, it just seemed like they didn’t have the right words to explain what they meant. Either way, it’s an interesting watch, and goes to show that what we take for granted isn’t always common knowledge.

Don’t leave post slugs as the default

This post is mainly aimed towards Wordpress, Textpattern and (probably) a multitude of other CMS driven website users. ‘Smart’ web software will automatically create a ‘slug’ for your new article, but it’s not always best to trust the CMS to come up with the best URL for you.

Frequently googled questions

An introduction to a new series of posts which I will be running relatively frequently answering some of the more obscure google search terms which cause people to land on slightlymore. The posts won’t appear in the normal blog section, they’ll just appear in the fgq section.

Feedburner Subscriber Count Problems

A few months ago when the switch was made from the Feedburner to Google servers and algorithms, many sites noticed that their subscriber count was lower, or worse, zero. It’s happened again. Even me, on this small time developer blog, have noticed a drop in numbers of around 30%. Jeff Star of Perishable press has posted a great write up on the recent subscriber drops, well worth a read.

Google, Yahoo and Adobe Flash Crawling Experiment – Flash ‘n’ SEO Indexing

Google claims to now understand and index Flash content. Do we believe it? The clever people over at webdesign beach have set up an entire site to test just that. And the cheeky little devils embedded the text in various ways to catch google out.

Me on the intertubes

It wouldn't be right to have a web site, be a nerd, and not take this opportunity for a bit of shameless pluggery.

If you like all these weird and magic internet page things, you should try Coaster Nerd, Oxford Bloggers or, if you'd really like some unexplainable sourcery, is it the weekend yet.

Also you should follow me on Twitter ;)

Where to find me

I can be found fairly regularly at Oxford Geek Nights, OxTuttle and other general nerding out activities in and around Oxford.

I am also often found in my natural habitat which is anywhere that you can find an adreneline machine. I frequent English theme parks more often than is healthy, and take trips abroad to sample foreign rides.

From the aviary

Was having a decidedly crap day of development. Just got much better. It's nice when things go your way. #win 1 day ago

Comedy disclaimer

These posts were written at the time of writing and may not still be accurate or reflect my opinions any more. In fact, they may not even be correct or representative at the time of writing. You see, when I write, I just write. I don't do that thing which they always told you to do at school and plan what you want to write first. Because of this, there will almost certainly be a load of typos, grammar errors and incorrect facts and references. If this makes you feel queasy, I apologise that you had to get to the bottom of the page to read this, and hope that some day, you'll learn to forgive me.

What's this site?

Slightlymore started off all too formally for my liking. In the depths of the archives, you'll find tutorials. However if you read the more recent posts, you'll find them a lot more playful and about fun and interesting stuff.
